Camp Horizon’s one and only, Karen Burns of Karen Images, was recently nominated for Best Self Atlanta magazine’s Over 40 and Fabulous contest. Their readers now know Karen is fabulous, but they might not know that she’s a real life hero for the foster youth in Atlanta community.
As our volunteer photographer, Karen has spent thousands of hours over the past 15 years, taking beautiful professional photos of the precious foster youth Camp Horizon serves. She looks through the lens of her camera with a special eye for love and affirmation. She captures images of great accomplishments and quiet moments of personal interaction.
With her exceptional skill, deep compassion, and unique view of Camp Horizon, she documents the lives of our campers during our camps and events. Many children in state custody have few, if any, photos of themselves as children. Karen makes sure that this is not the case for our campers. She takes hundreds of photos of each child and carefully chooses the best shots. The best photos are printed and given to each child during the year.
Karen’s husband, Troy, explains why these photos are so important to the children, “These kids have bounced around from place to place and home to home and they’ve lost a lot of their stuff along the way. So many of them grow up and they don’t have all of the typical mementos people have from their childhood. They don’t have photos of themselves as they grew up. One way we can give back is to take pictures and offer them those memories.”
The campers are always so excited to have pictures of their smiles, victories, acts of bravery, friendships, laughter and learning – all of the childhood joys they experience at Camp. With every picture, our campers are reminded that they are treasured members of our Camp Horizon family.
Along with her extraordinary professional skills, Karen is a dear friend and mentor to our campers. Her tender heart causes her to notice when a child needs an extra word of encouragement or increased support. She truly sees our kids, through her camera and with her heart.
The children of Camp Horizon are so grateful for the love and dedication Karen has given our campers and our organization. She is an everyday hero for the city of Atlanta!
